If you’ve recently cleaned your bedroom from top to bottom, the chances are that you may have overlooked washing your pillows. The truth is that pillow cases collate a lot of bacteria and debris over time, so cleaning them as often as possible is very important. There’s no set schedule for washing your pillows, but many experts recommend washing them at least two or three times a year.
Preparing For Your Wash
There’s a quick way to check whether or not your pillow will need a wash, or if it may need replacing altogether; and that’s to fold it in half. If it springs back in to shape, then a wash should replenish it. If it doesn’t, then it won’t be suitable as a pillow any longer. Maybe use it as something else? A pet’s bed, extra padding or insulation, or even a stuffed animal. If your pillow is ready for a wash however, then place it inside of your machine and try to use liquid detergent, as opposed to powder which can cause stains.
Washing Tips and Techniques
It might seem easy to wash a single pillow at a time, but in reality your washer may be unbalanced as it spins the solo pillow. A better idea would be to place two pillows in the machine and wash them simultaneously. This will help with the potential balancing issue. It’s also a good idea to check out the label before washing your pillows. If this label has worn away, then the common practice is to wash pillows in warm water, and on a gentle setting.
Another great washing technique involves placing a couple of tennis balls (or similar sized rubber objects) inside of the machine. As they are spun, they will help to beat out any excess levels of water, and this means quicker drying times when it comes to hanging your pillows. One of the biggest concerns with regular pillows is that they can be prone to clumping when drying, and placing a tennis ball inside of the machine will help to keep clumps at bay too.
Cleaning Foam Pillows
If you’re using memory foam, or foam pillows in general, then it’s never a good idea to clean them. Foam works in the same way as a sponge, and it will absorb water easily – making it very difficult to dry. If you want to give your foam pillows a good clean, then consider plugging in your vacuum cleaner and using the hose to suck up any dirt or debris that may have accumulated over time. It’s never a good idea to get the foam wet, as this may result in staining.
